Android lacks everything we need for Arabic script. Actually, our script is so sophisticated that no mobile operating system has full support for it. Every mobile platform has its own glitches when it comes to Arabic script.
FarsiTel was designed to fix that. It has a deep, no-compromise support for every detail and complexity of Arabic script. Being developed by Sharif FarsiWeb, Inc., the company that helped define Arabic script in Unicode, co-designed and implemented Unicode’s Bidirectional Algorithm, and has pioneered Persian and Arabic localization for the last 10 years, FarsiTel brings all these specifications and standards to life, providing Arabic and Persian users with an extraordinary experience.

FarsiTel has one new option in Android’s date and time settings: calendar type. It currently provides two choices: Gregorian (Android’s default) or Iranian, but can easily contain any other calendar type too. This simple and easy-looking option is implemented so thoroughly that not only changes all the dates in Android itself, but will even change date messages in third-party applications. By selecting a new calendar type Android’s default Calendar application will turn into a completely new thing, displaying everything in your current calendar preference, while automatically displaying events at their correct day in each calendar system.

Just adding support for Arabic text and even translating all the messages isn’t enough. FarsiTel provides a right-to-left user interface too. Just select a right-to-left language (Persian or Arabic), and everything will change under your fingers, as if Android’s interface was right-to-left from the beginning! All the elements are drawn and aligned from right to left; positions are mirrored stylishly; progress bars are filled up from right to left; and even icons are mirrored when it makes sense. Even numbers everywhere are displayed using localized digits.
In FarsiTel users never feel their language is an inappropriate add-on to a foreigner software, but see it as an integrated and smooth part of the system.

FarsiTel is localized like no other mobile operating system, but we see all that as a platform for just the beginning of a new kind of user experience for Middle Easterners. Android with all the essential requirements for local users is an exciting, new environment for application development. We will release FarsiTel’s SDK in a near future to promote and simplify that. Iranian’s Congenial Mobile Co. itself has started developing new applications specially designed with the lifestyle of local users in mind, helping them in ways that no other application has done yet.
FarsiTel successfully migrated to Android 2.2, the latest version of the OS, in just two weeks after its release. In the future it will continue to move along with newer versions of Android, while growing itself, adding new features for Persian and Arabic users. Only time will show how much can be done for Middle Easterner users.
